How To Sharpen A Dull Knife

A knife is a very important and must have tool in every kitchen. It is virtually impossible to create any dish without a knife.

A good knife gives you full control on how you want the ingredients to be shaped and the satisfaction of crisp clean cut.

To achieve this controls you need a sharpened knife. 

You can always purchase a new knife if you want but you can save a few bucks if you just sharpen it yourself. Keep reading to find many ways to sharpen a dull knife.

There are many ways you can sharpen a knife but you must keep one thing in mind – ‘It doesn’t matter how you sharpen your knife, some steel will grind off every time you sharpen it’.

So, eventually you have a buy a new knife but sharpening will double the life of a knife.

You can sharpen a knife by two ways –

  1. With a sharpener/whetstone.
  2. Without a sharpener.

Let me just explain what I mean.

With a sharpener/whetstone.

Sharpener and whetstone are generally not available in every kitchen. You must either buy it or ask someone who own it.

But if you must buy a sharpener then why not buy a new knife instead, you might ask. Because sharpeners are less expensive and can sharpen unlimited number of knives before breaking. Sharpeners are very easy to use as well.

How to use a sharpener?

  1. Place the sharpener on a flat surface and hold it tightly using the grip.
  2. Now place the knife into the slot at a 90° angle.
  3. Gently pull your knife from base to tip without applying pressure.
  4. Repeat the process until you are happy ????

You can buy quality sharpeners from amazon or at any local utensil store around you.

Whetstones are another alternative to sharpeners and they have their own advantages over sharpeners. Although they are expensive then sharpener but it can sharpen many more knives than a sharpener can.

How to use a Whetstone?

  1. Dip the whetstone in water for about 20 minutes so that it can soak the optimum amount of water.
  2. Now place the whetstone on a flat surface.
  3. Now move the blade forth and back at an angle of 20° approximately.
  4. Make sure to apply the water every 2 minutes because the particles of stone shed when the sharpening takes place.
  5. Turn the knife and repeat the process until you are satisfied.

Whetstones are also available on amazon if you want to buy. Not sure if many of us can buy it locally, because I can’t…lol.

Without a sharpener/whetstone.

You can use many things that are available in almost every kitchen to sharpen a dull knife. But you must keep few things in mind before sharpening. The quality will not be as good as you would expect from a sharpener or a whetstone. Also, you might have to sharpen your knives on a regular basis.

Ceramic Plates

Ceramic mugs or plates can be used as a temporary sharpener to sharpen knives. But I do not suggest sharpening your knife on regular basis by this method. You should either use a sharpener or take it to a professional.

How to use Ceramic Plate

  1. Place the ceramic plate on a flat surface.
  2. Move the blade back and forth at an angle of 35° approximately to get the best result.
  3. Turn the knife and repeat the process.

The carbon atoms in the knife will be aligned in a specific way by performing above steps, which results in sharpness.

A Stone

Yes, a stone. Just go out there and find a stone that fits in your hand. Just like whetstone, normal stone can be used to sharpen a dull and rusty knife.

How to use a Stone

  1. Submerge the stone in water to soak the optimum amount of water.
  2. Now gently move the blade back and forth to scrape the rust off the knife.
  3. Turn the knife and repeat the process.

This is one of the simplest yet effective method to sharpen a dull knife. But, I don’t recommend this method either on regular basis because it will grind much more steel this way and eventually decreasing the overall life of the knife.
